Why Am I So Tired After Waking?

If you seem to still be tired each morning after waking from sleep, there may be an issue with how you are sleeping. Here are some potential medical issues that can lead to your sleep not leaving you refreshed. 

Not getting enough sleep

If you are cutting your sleep short each night, even by a few minutes, you can find that you accumulate a sleep debt which is not repaid at the end of each night of sleep. A good way to check this can be to let yourself sleep until you naturally wake up one day. If you find that you end up sleeping much longer than normal when left to sleep uninterrupted, then this can be a sign that you are too tired and need to be getting to bed earlier each night. 

Hormone or diet deficiencies

Some medical issues can cause ongoing fatigue, such as anaemia or an under performing thyroid gland. If you find that you are having a reasonable amount of sleep and are not feeling refreshed, it can be a good idea to visit the family doctor and get some blood tests to check if your underlying health is responsible. Supplements or medication can help to adjust hormone or nutrient levels to give you the necessary energy levels.

Mental health issues

One of the symptoms of a range of mental health issues, including depression, can be a difficulty in getting up each day and a general feeling of fatigue and malaise which are not resolved with sleep. If you feel like this might be an issue for you, it can be a good idea to go to the doctor and get your mental health assessed. Often antidepressants or medication can help you get better sleep if that is the issue. 

Sleep disorders

If you have a sleep disorder such as a sleep apnoea or restless leg syndrome, you may be moving and waking yourself at night without you knowing that there is an issue. The only way to diagnose these sorts of issues is to go in for sleep studies. These can help to work out if you have a sleep disorder and organise appropriate treatment depending on the disorder. 

Sleep is a vital part of your overall health. If you are not feeling refreshed after sleep, then you should speak your doctor. It's important to get an accurate diagnosis so you can start getting treated and get back to feel rested.
